About Family Mosaic

Family Mosaicis a free web app that helps families preserve elders' life stories as audio recordings. You send your parent or grandparent a question by text, WhatsApp, or email. They tap the link, the recording page opens in their browser, and they answer in their own voice. Every story is automatically transcribed and saved to a private family archive — no app for them to install, no account for them to create, no typing required.

We built Family Mosaic because the most meaningful parts of a family's history are rarely written down. They live in conversations, in everyday phrases, in the way a mother says her late husband's name, in the way a grandfather laughs in the middle of a story he's told a hundred times. Photographs preserve faces; only audio preserves voices. The voice is the part that, more than anything else, was the person.

How it works

Family Mosaic uses two roles. Managers are the adult children or grandchildren who set up the archive, pick or write questions, send recording links, and download exports. Storytellers are the elders whose voices are being preserved. They never need to log in. They receive a link, tap a single button, and record. Optional Contributors — siblings, cousins, in-laws — can suggest questions for the Manager to send.

Each question creates one recording, one transcript, and one entry in the archive. There's no homework. No long interview sessions. No pressure to be thorough. Just a steady rhythm: one question at a time, at the storyteller's own pace, building into something that grows for years.

What you can do with the archive

  • Listen and re-listen to recordings in a clean web player, with the cleaned-up transcript alongside.
  • Export a PDF or Word document of the full archive, formatted with photos and dates, ready to print or share.
  • Generate an audiobook — a single file with AI-narrated chapter introductions that ties every story together into something a grandchild can listen to end-to-end.
  • Share a listening link — a read-only, PIN-gated public link relatives without an account can use to listen to the stories.
  • Download the raw audio at any time. Your family's recordings belong to your family.

Designed for elders

Most apps in this space ask the elder to do the hard part — download software, create an account, learn an interface. We took the opposite path. The storyteller's experience is a single browser page with one big button. The UI uses high contrast, large text, and the simplest possible flow. We test every change against the question: could my 82-year-old grandmother do this without help on the first try?

Languages

The interface is fully translated into English, Spanish, German, Slovak, and Arabic (with full right-to-left support). Automatic transcription works across most major languages, and accuracy improves over time as you correct names and unusual words.

Privacy

Recordings are private to your family by default. We don't share or sell your family's audio. You control who has access, and you can delete the archive at any time. Read the full privacy policy.

Pricing

Family Mosaic is free to try. You can create an account, send recording links, build an archive, and download exports at no cost.
